Showing where Hal is already struggling to maintain his sense of individuality. He is thinking like a slave, whether he wants to or not. He is angry, he even admits that he is angry, but he is choosing to make the best of his situation and enjoy himself anyway, which of course is only going to reinforce that he likes being a slave in the long run, as we both know.
That level of detail is what really sets your writing apart.
