Male Chastity in the Future: Society in AD2100
How sextech might shape the future of male chastity devices
So it’s the year AD2100. The Smart Chastity Cage has been around for sixty years. We’ve had a visible chaste and chaste-chasing minority for most of that time.
What does society look like at the dawn of the 22nd century?
Technology has moved on. The SCC100 is a meshlike second skin that only hardens and constricts when you get hard. It’s like the difference between a Model T Ford and… well I was going to say Tesla, but you know what I mean.
The uptake for male chastity technology has shaped society, but the society it has shaped is woven from other developments.
The omnivaccine is almost as old as the Smart Chastity Cage. Disease no longer factors in people’s lives. Society is also safer than it’s ever been, with effective mental health services and effective policing. Dangerous individuals are always dealt with, usually before they become dangerous. For chaste dating, this means you can be as promiscuous as you like with few physical risks, and no stigma associated with those risks. The term “dirty [your slur here]” no longer resonates. However, that’s just the start of the medical revolution we’ve seen.
Longevity
There’s a joke that “longevity has only been around for a generation!”
The generation that came to adulthood in 2040 are still with us, and mostly look like the weathered thirty-year-olds you see in movies from a hundred and fifty years ago.
…longevity has only been around for a generation!
The impact of longevity on society has been massive, with downstream effects for sex and relationships. Life has become a game, albeit a very serious one.
Adults Only: Society is now almost entirely adult in the literal sense. To keep the population stable, only a tiny percentage of people are allowed to reproduce on Earth. (Mars Colony is a different story.)
“Think of the children” is now an almost meaningless phrase. The small number of children are well protected from harmful influences - though we are still debating what those are.
The end result is a lot more openness about sex and sexual tastes. (It helps that everybody is hot and healthy and law enforcement makes people feel safe.)
For example, submissives now openly wear collars to indicate power exchange relationships the way they once did wedding rings. Public sexual behaviour is now quite normal. The taboos are mostly about what’s in good taste in particular places.
So if you find a couple having sex in an alley, you retreat politely. There are town squares where you don’t go for a beer if you’re bothered by people being publically whipped. There are whole communities based on particular orientations or dynamics, e.g. Femdom suburbs and Maledom ranches, and the famous Leather City with its Tom of Finland Plaza.
This is a world where Chastes and Virgos can be quite open about who we are.
Ocean of Time: Nobody treats their time as precious. You can blow ten years on a dysfunctional relationship, or spend five as a mute sex slave, and that was just an experience you had.
Everything you build gets swept away by time, including relationships. So there’s no urgency in courtship, no rush to secure a life partner, because realistically they aren’t. If the timing is wrong this time, we’ll wait thirty years and try again.
This lack of urgency can lead to a boredom, a sense of pointlessness, and then depression. People respond by seeking adventure and variety. Longevity makes us physically cautious — we don’t want to throw away the next one hundred years in a bunjee jumping accident — but it does make us profligate with our time. Hence, various ambitious cultural projects, such as reservations where communities living as if in the Stone Age, and sexual cultural ones like Leather City. Hence, also, lengthy personal sexual and erotic escapades. Nobody feels they’re missing out by spending five years in chastity.
State as Games Master: Since life is a game, the State has become the Games Master, making decisions to keep life interesting. Since people need adventure, and adventure must have possible consequences, so some polities now support coercive contracts. Slavery is back. It’s consensual going in and there are contractual safeguards, but it is otherwise irrevocable until expired.
Slave contracts are only legal after the participants are screened using lie detectors. They are time-limited — usually five years — and have some limits enforced by smart surveillance. A straight slave won’t generally find themselves in a forced bi situation. (The expectation is that if you do have a bad experience, then advances in medicine and therapy should sort that out — if that’s what you want.)
No surprise then that chastes can sign something similar to a slave contract with the state committing to so many years of continuous chastity, or with an individual making them the effective keyholder.
Other Advances
Three advances are particularly important to the world of male chastity:
Psychology: These days, we truly know how the human personalty works. Therapy is a solved problem.
Unfortunately, nobody can agree what “psychological health” is. In the past, therapists tried to get people to fit into society. Now society mostly fits around us, or we can find others like us where we fit.
And people in 2100 can do that because we do have a very strong and accurate sense of our authentic selves, and we’re no longer apologetic about it. Sadist and masochist are just another aspect of sexual orientation.
In this world, Chastes and Virgos know who they are, and the hardcore ones know that’s all they are. There’s not much room for self deception.
Modern Surgical Science: On a technical level, our bodies are now just meat puppets. Most of the body modifications you could imagine are possible, including true sex changes, and almost all of them are reversible. Needless to say, surgery and tissue regrowth can also repair just about any injuries as long as the brain is intact.
The longer people live, the more they dispassionate they become about their bodies. Not only do we see increasingly wild modifications — anybody for horns and fur? — we also see increased risk-taking and acceptance of injury. Martial Arts contests have become almost gladiatorial, gladitorial games are back, and some BDSM communities look like the Spanish Inquisition.
Some Chastes have therefore discarded the Smart Chastity Cage in favour of radical body modification, leaving them with their genitals tucked into a sort of hardened pouch, giving them a truly neutered look.
Law Enforcement: We have embraced the panopticon society — it was simply too difficult to resist the visibility that came with our need for connectivity. The good news is that we have very strict rules on human freedom. So people are free to pursue their rights, no matter how unwise, without fear of violence from others.
This makes coercive contracts both possible and safe, and safeguards freedom of sexual expression, so shaping the lives of the chastes and those who love them.
Impact of Male Chastity
We live in a post scarcity world where people do work, but either at hobby jobs or human leadership and supervisory ones wrestling with the what and why, rather than the how.
So, you use the credits from your organic vegetable sales to buy coffee in a retro coffee shop and discuss the wisdom of the new orbital colony project with the collared barrister.
We chastes have emerged as a distinct minority. Only certain sorts of personalities become chastes in the first place, and the perpetual sexual frustration further shapes our personalities. People find us lovably distractable and comically over-emotional, or call us flakes and attention seekers. We tend to find ourselves front-of-house as eye candy, or in sales — as long as it’s not too complex.
Beyond that, there are two possible AD 2100s:
(Option 1) If sex differences are mostly a social construct built off now irrelevant physical differences, then we end up with hyper masculine chastes.
Sex is now almost irrelevant to society. Men and women have converged as men shed toxic masculinity, and women shrugged off the constrictions of patriarchy. Fashion is unisex and sex is only relevant for the minority who aren’t functionally bisexual (these tend to wear badges). Everybody uses “they/them” except chastes.
We chastes have helped with this convergence, while being ironically left out of it.
Since only a man can be a chaste, we’ve kept the “he/him” pronouns. The greater the uptake of gender neutral pronouns, the more that “he/him” came to only refer to chastes, the more that men dropped “he/him”— you don’t put a chaste in charge of anything! So now the world is made up of 90% Normals (“they/them”) and 10% Chastes (“he/him”), and chastes present as hypermasculine.
(Option 2) If key sex differences on average are biological in origin…
Society has become feminised, a trend that we can date back to the early 21st century when more women than men started graduating from college, and when women took over middle management in an increasing range of sectors, then started to smash the glass ceiling.
AI and automation has long done away with most traditional masculine jobs. Muscle is no longer required, and the male “works with things” mentality has been supplanted by AI. We also no longer need “alpha male” leaders to get things done, since these are generally outperformed by teams of sensible women employing data based decision-making.
Some time mid last century, working culture hit a tipping point where it was so optimised for women’s emotional intelligence, social skills and conscientiousness, that it became hard for most men to navigate. Fashion reflected this, with women projecting femininity, now associated with power and responsibility, and men wavering between a soft look and a folorn exagerated masculinity.
So, though we don’t formally live in a gynarchy, the nature of our society’s structures and institutions mean that women mostly run everything, while men get their status from sports and from hobby projects and businesses.
For better or worse, Chastes have probably accelerated this process.
As far back as the 2040s, professional women started adopting Virgo style, especially that of the Virago (i.e. dominant) variant. They also tended to hire attractive Chastes for basic reception roles, and increasingly flaunt chaste boyfriends and husbands. This made “basic” men uncomfortable and put them in their place.
Being a Chaste became a good way to court a high status woman, and having a Chaste as a partner become a status symbol. If you read blogs of the time, you’ll find young men complaining about hot older female executives coming onto them in bars and saying they’d be “much sexier with a cage on it”.
These days, of course, the ultimate status symbol is a fully neutered male — the pouch procedure I mentioned earlier — sporting a ten year slave collar and other body modifications. Increasingly, all chastes are seen as potential future slaves… which makes life interesting, especially in polities where women can buy a “slave raiding license”…
Please suggest alternative futures in the comments!
Contemplating all this…
It’s been a wild ride into the future, and I swear some of this will come true!
Looking back at what I’ve written, I realise I’ve assumed three underlying Laws of Future Sex:
If some people like a sex thing that hacks normal instincts, then a lot of people will probably like it.
If a lot of people like a sex thing, they’ll find way to do it
If a lot of people are doing a sex thing, then a market will grow up to support it, and even more people will discover and like the sex thing.
Sooner or later the sex thing becomes normalised.
As of 2024, thirty years ago, male chastity was a weird niche kink, but it was only niche because nobody had heard of it, and it was almost impossible to buy good chastity devices.
Thirty years before that, it was vibrators.
And a hundred years before that, it was contraceptives.
People aren’t as individual as we’d perhaps like to think…
Check out another possible future of chastity…
This is looking in parts as a slightly more dystopian ("all adults", "no crime") but also in some ways more realistic (depressingly so for "basic human evolved architecture") version of Iain M. Banks' Culture universe -- still the only space opera I'd actually like to live in tho.
I absolutely love the two alternative timelines for sex differences, and the idea that chastes present hypermasculine is genius: this suggests that the symbolic "taming the beast" narrative is dominant and all the other needs fulfilled by chastity (gender nonconformity, performance anxieties/feelings of inadequacy for the males and all the problems on the female side from vaginismus to inability to enjoy penetration and orgasm by PIV on the female side etc) are dealt with by other body mods/med tech advances.
It also makes for a very intriguing possibility of the emergence of a dominant chaste class, whether societally or sexually.
I absolutely can't see why hyperfeminine, highly sexed, submissively minded female bodied people wouldn't indulge in chastity too, though?
