The statuesque red-haired woman in the mirror grinned back at Shona. "Looking good."

It turned out that money really could buy you happiness.

Footsteps resounded in the stairwell.

“Hang on,” she said. “Change of plan. Hide in there and I’ll take them through to the lounge.”

“Fuck that!” said Hal. “I’m already running late.”

The doorbell proper rang.

Shona opened the latch.

Victor grinned at her. He was immaculate in his tailored suit, and with his arm around his even more tailored escort; a skinny dark-haired girl in stiletto heels and a little black dress. She looked just old enough to be an office temp. “Tabitha, meet Shona...”

Tabitha blinked at Shona. Her eyes widened and she blushed.

Shona recognised the gothy waitress from the wine bar, sans heavy eye make up. The girl was older than she first looked, but still far tinier than she had realised. Shona had always been seated when she'd been served by her.

Tabitha giggled "So, you're Shona."

Now it was Victor's turn to blink. "Do you ladies... know each other?"

“I'm pleased to meet you,” said Shona. She shot a dagger glance at Victor. “After all these months.”

“Thought it would be nice for the three of us to get to know each other,” said Victor, eyes twinkling. The son-of-a-bitch wanted her to get into a state before the other guests arrived. This was all head game.

There was a clunk and the bathroom door opened.

Whatshisname emerged from the bathroom, freshly showered and shaved, a white shirt complementing his olive skin, black chinos showing off his muscular legs, groin bulging as if he were hung like a donkey.

"Hal!" Tabitha giggled. "Another wine bar connection."

"Yes." Hal --- that was his name and Shona was damned well going to remember it --- nodded. He thrust out his hand. “Pleased to meet you, Victor. Shall we go through for drinks?”

Victor did the man thing of trying to crush Hal's hand.

Hal just grinned and crushed back.

Victor grinned nervously. "How about that drink, Mal?"

"Hal. Yes, let's."

"Hang on." Shona grabbed Tabitha's arm. "I want to..." Grill you about that cheating bastard. "...get some help picking jewellery. Girl time?" God that sounded lame.

"Good plan...," said Victor."I..." He glanced from woman to woman. His eyebrows lowered. "Perhaps later... I mean... That is."

"Oh," said Tabitha. She clapped her hands making her bracelets rattle. "Yes please."

Shona ushered the girl into her bedroom. "So..."

Whatshisname's voice came from the hall. "It's OK I've got it!"
