Many here enjoy the fantasy that we're locked and there's no way to escape. Most here understand it to be a fantasy. I've seen someone quip that locking up a flaccid penis is like trying to handcuff an octopus. And in my experience, that is 100% the case. Despite being 125 mm flaccid (Kink3D measuring method), I can easily compress my penis until it's flat which makes popping out the back of any cage trivial (getting the cage off your balls is another story).
I'm mainly going to focus on ball trap devices and shaft-only devices as I know very little about chastity belts (not to be confused with straps that are often used to hold a cage up). And I'm going to discard any security concerns that simply involve destroying the cage.
Lock options
These are the locking options that I've seen:
Barrel locks are usually clones of Burg Wächter's ME/2. Many of the locks you find with inexpensive cages use one of a handful of keys. I have quite a collection of these little locks and most of them use the same keys. Burg Wächter locks can be bought individually keyed. But these locks really are trivial to pick. Their popularity is mainly because they allow for fairly low-profile junctions. And their ubiquity also means it's easy to find attractive keys for them that a keyholder wouldn't mind wearing on a chain.
Padlocks.. prior to barrel locks, most cages used padlocks. Generally these were Abus 65/20 sized locks although you do see other sizes. They get a bad wrap for being loud and clanging against the cage but that really depends on cage design. They are still popular for their ability to work with cages that have easily adjustable ball gaps (either via spacers a la CBX-style devices or by relatively simple metalwork for custom devices like the Jail Bird).
Push-button locks a la Holy Trainer offer a unique value-proposition: they can be locked without the key. That's nice for re-locking after a hygiene unlock. They are also pretty low-profile and allow for junction desings that don't cause any unusual contours in the pants.
Security screws are generally only found in metal custom devices and Evotion offers them in their nylon devices. Security screws are regular screws that use a head that's unique to that artisan. I am a big fan of security screws as they allow for a very low-profile junction and they can eliminate all play in a junction.. no wiggling of flexing. Often people balk at the cost of security screws but offering the drivers is a significant cost for a cage artisan. Obviously they can't be picked unlike a lock and having them countersunk would make removal using anything but the driver far more difficult. Their major disadvantage that I've seen is it's not quite as romantic to have your partner take a screwdriver out to let you out of your cage. Also, you won't find little security-tag compatible emergency key holders for them (I just design and 3D print my own).
Quasi-security screws are screws that use anything from an Allen head (hexagonal) to something a little less common like a torx screw. But I differentiate these from security screws as the driver is easily purchased from anywhere but otherwise they offer all the advantages of security screws. I've only seen them on inexpensive steel cages.
Security tags… the idea here is to keep you honest by simply slapping a numbered security tag on the cage. This has advantages in certain situations where the caged needs to be able to unlock and relock without the key, presumedly sending photos to the keyholder documenting it all.
E-clips are used with screws and they make it impossible for the screw to be removed. Badass Workroom actually offers these as an option. You will see quite a few photos in perm chastity circles of people installing e-clips on their cages. I don't quite know how these work exactly but they are supposed to make removing the screw virtually impossible. Yes, people do actually do this. I've read a credible account of a man locked in a BAWR cage for several years and cutting through the cage when he was ready to upgrade.
Unlockable barrel locks. Cherry Keeper and I’m sure some others offer these. They are made of plastic and once you lock them, they can’t be unlocked. Obviously, as these are just plastic they’d be trivial to drill out but I guess they fill a niche for self-lockers who want to make it more difficult to unlock than thawing some ice but aren’t interested in e-clips.
Stopping or frustrating pull-out
While I certainly enjoy looking down at a security screw and knowing no lock-picking video is going to get me out of it, it takes a bit of metal gymnastics to try to forget I can just pop out the back. So, in addition to the various ways to lock the cage, there are various ways to ensure the lock actually keeps you in the cage that include:
Piercings are the most common method of securing a cage with Prince Alberts having the broadest support. Quite a few cages offer support for PAs including inexpensive Chinese cages. The idea with piercings is that you use the hole in your penis to keep it from being pulled out without ripping tissue. The piercings easiest to use with chastity do take a while to heal and stretch to be large enough gauge to use with chastity (e.g., for a PA, you want nothing smaller than an 8g piercing but larger would be better). Frenulum piercings heal much faster but they have certain challenges with chastity cages but I know some people are big fans of them as they only penetrate the skin and not the tissue.
Tetherspouts, something I use, make use of a quirk of male anatomy and I liken them to a prosthetic PA. Without going into details (see r/tetherspout), they only go right inside the glans like a PA so carry far less UTI risk than other urethra inserts. They can be completely comfortable and secure but their main disadvantage is few manufacturers offer native support for them (although they can be secured with a simple lock). Badass Workroom and Evotion as well as a few others have cages with such support. But like a piercing, they can be left in more or less indefinitely but need to be removed for sex. Editorializing just a bit, aside from the lack of cage support and needing a minute to remove prior to sex, these seem to have little downsides and offer some serious advantages over PAs: no healing, not permanent, and you don’t need to worry about urine leaking out any extra holes.
Urethral inserts are something I have no experience with although there is a post by Mr Pickle that details his long-term use of them. My understanding is that they work by going far enough up the urethra that pulling out simply isn't possible as the tube just goes too far up the shaft.
Glans retainer rings use a ring on a pivot that rests over the corona. Usually they are a "you can get out without the key but you won't be getting back in without it" kind of device that ensures security through accountability. I say usually because The Grip, r/HzdGrip, uses a very innovative design that quite a few beta testers (and yours truely) are reporting as very secure, at least more secure than the barrel lock that secures the ring. It doesn't seem that these are very usable for uncircumcised.
Chains.. I’m only aware of the one offered by Mature Metal but I’m sure there must be others. The idea is you have a chain welded to the base ring and it would be tight enough that you can’t pull out. I have a hard time understanding how this would be workable as it seems that if it’s tight enough to prevent pull-out, it’s too tight to sit down while wearing it. But I’m going to give MM the benefit of the doubt that it must be somewhat effective for them to offer it. But I’ve never seen any reviews so no clue.
Stopping masturbation
Using nothing but my hands, I can pretty much successfully masturbate any any cage that I would consider permanently wearable (i.e., no hygiene unlocks). Devices like the Jail Bird that are open enough to allow easy cleaning are also open enough to allow all sorts of mischief. The main way to frustrate masturbation, either manual or using a shower head, include more coverage and other design features that make it more difficult. For example, the Spyder's design makes rubbing up and down the shaft far less pleasant despite its openness or a device like the Viper just removes access all together (at the expense of hygiene).
But none of these techniques are Magic Wand proof. The way Jenn removes temptation is simply locking the thing up in a lockbox. Another way for an AC powered vibrator is to add something like this to it. But nothing stopping you from running to your local drug store and buying a new one. Fortunately, there's a solution for even that. May I present Cagezilla, the answer to the age old question, "why can't I just wear two cages at once?" It looks ridiculous and it really is but I imagine it's actually wearable in titanium. It probably weighs less than 200g. The only review I've seen says it's fairly effective and significantly dampens the vibrations from a Magic Wand.
Summary
Unless you're willing to go to extremes, all chastity devices require a bit of self-control. On one end of the spectrum is mental chastity and at the other end is a double cage with a piercing and security screw. Most of us are happy with cages somewhere in the middle. But, I do get a certain degree of pleasure when I wear a closed cage with a tetherspout (I'm wearing such a BAWR test cage now) as very little self-control is required and I feel far more at the mercy of my wife than I do with many other cages.
