Breaking: Image of a Roman Male Permanent Chastity Device?
Kinky revelations from the Roman world...
I think I’ve found the only extant illustration of a Roman “theca” or penis sheath, from an obscure book by Pignorius, a 16th century antiquarian.
There’s clearly a Game of Telephone at work; this wasn’t drawn from a real artefact, but maybe from an earlier sketch or diagram of one.
To my mind this is like the Victorian reconstructions of the Iguanodon. Faced with some random bones, they famously put the spiked thumb on the nose:
Looked at that way, the Pignorius illustration could be a garbled picture of an attempt to reconstruct a male chastity device by somebody who didn’t know what one looked like…
